Day Eight

We wanted to tour the Amstel brewery today but had heard many conflicting things on time and even the internet couldn't help us. They start at 9 on tuesdays and thursdays, so we'll have just enough time to see it before our flight leaves tuesday. Instead, we went to the curacao liquor distillery and saw the process. It was not as exciting as making ziploc bags; but then again it's a much smaller operation. We got a big bottle of the blue, and a small set of the five different colors. They all taste the same, they just color them differently for mixed drinks. I have no idea why the blue caught on outside the country.

We came back to the little local beach and spent the day with our toes in the sand. The water is as clear as bathwater, but has the beautiful teal hue you see on all the travel ads. We built a castle in the sand and named it "Fort George - A Home for Fish". No fish came to explore, and the fort had an unexpected end when a little boy who was trying to jump over the fort didn't quite make it. He looked scared of us the rest of the afternoon, and ran way down the sand instead of running closer to us.

Almost all of the restaurants here on the island have happy hours, so we went to one called "Blues" that sticks right out over the ocean. We had fun but then when we were hungry we discovered they do one reservation per table all night long, and we were starving. We decided to break Austin's rule about american food on vacation and got a pizza to take back to the hotel. Janine had a few too many Amstel Brights (a lot like a Corona, complete with lime) and kept a lively spanish commentary up while Austin drove us around the city. The local language is a mix of spanish, dutch, and portugese and Janine's been exercising her vocabulary again.
