Mood Music

Did you ever have specific songs or artists that remind you of a specific place or feeling? Of course you do. You have that first dance song or romantic minuet on the tip of your brain.

I was thinking about this the other day, but from outside the usual romantic or break-up scenarios. It was more of a general I was here when this was on the stereo genre of memories. Here are a few random groups that come to mind.

Live - Throwing Copper
I remember listening to this disk on a regular basis while playing online Multi-User Dungeon (MUD) back in my Dad's old house. I just had the ol' Mac II SE moved into my room and rocketed away on a 14.4k modem while chatting it up with friends online. I think the album was my favorite at the time, and I could kill plenty of time on the MUD (I'm sure my parents are greatful it was a local call). I can recall everything about the room fairly vividly.

Sting - Fields of Gold (I think)
This one brings back memories of sitting in the back seat of the Explorer on our way up to Lake Tahoe for the weekend. This one usualy came on while were were on 80 through the inclines and turns of the Sierras, about an hour or so outisde of Truckee. It was almost always night, and I'd just stare out the side of the car watching the trees go by in the darkness.

Duncan Sheik
Janine introduced me to this guy; Light on the ears, good for the senses, and great for relaxation. I have him on a playlist of sleepytime music, and I always listen to it while flying across to France for work. The red-eye flights are always hard on the internal clock, but laying down in my own row and listening to him on repeat for a few hours, breathing in the scent of recycled cabin air, put me in my own little cubbie between rows 22 and 24.
