So, we begin with a sheep. I've been trying to convince Austin we could use a playmate for Syndey and feed the sheep kibble. Sheep eat kibble, right?
Next we see the fiber I purchased at the recent Stitches festival. I'll let someone else wash it and dye it and card it smooth.
I pulled out small bits of the fiber while twirling the spindle below me, and end up with something resembling yarn. It seems like a circus act, with things hanging and twirling and pulling and winding and twisting back on itself.
After about an hour and an ounce of the fiber, I knit up a swatch to see how homely and slubby it would look. And the answer is: not too bad at all!
It's very dense and I think it would make an excellent set of mittens. The only problem is the dye, it's stained my hands bright orange and our scrubbing brush purple. The roving was dyed with natural colors and set using gentle methods. I'm all fine with using environmentally-friendly products, but not if they don't work the way they're supposed to. I do have another pile of fibers from someone else and may just switch over until I figure out to do with this orangey stuff. Wait, don't I have a deadline for those socks? Grumble...

Posted by: Dad on August 21, 2005 09:06 AMDid you know that in new zealand (and i'm sure in other places, but the place i've heard about is NZ) they have a place where they take you through a live demonstration of the entire sheep to knitting wool process?
