Sock-a-pal-2-za

After my recent success with socks for Austin and myself, I decided to join the Sock-a-pal-2-za knitalong. Everyone is randomly assigned a person to knit for, and I got lucky with someone who likes bright colors. On our last trip through Chicago I managed to convince Austin we needed to stop at "Three Bags Full" and I ended up with some fabulous orange/yellow/red/purple yarn.

I think it's delightful! It's a cotton yarn by Lang, called Golf Color. I also got a few patterns and have spent the last two weeks trying different things. I tried a lace pattern, but since the yarn changes color every five stitches it looked too busy and confusing. I tried the Crusoe pattern from my rainbow connection socks and it made me dizzy. I tried to go more understated with the Lava Flow pattern from the Sockbug but the slipped stitches didn't look as nice in un-stretchy cotton. I tried different ribbing for the cuff, but it was too stiff. Picot edging just didn't work. What to do? Since they're for another knitter I couldn't just make a plain ol' boring pair of socks! So, I was at Hobby Lobby and picked up some fur that matches the cool yarn very well. I picked up some stitches along the cuff, and voila! Firecracker socks! I figure even if my sock pal isn't fond of the fun fur, she can always snip it off and be left with a normal rolled stockinette edge. My conscience is clear since I got to use this very cool cotton yarn and they're still interesting.

Wow! Firecracker socks! Is your real new mission to turn everybody into Thermal Girl/Guy with hot feet, so blankeets the world over will only come in half sizes? Devious, but you are sure putting enough effort into it. You aren't using your sick days to stay home and knit are you? Although you do seem to have some kind of a fever.
